It interlaced my recorded videos (which all DVD recorders do, I later discovered), which looked fine on a normal TV but not at all good on my laptop or an HD TV (particularly with animations). There are ways around this issue, such as de-interlacing software, but these just make backing up old tapes an even longer process and the results were not always as good as I would have liked.Then I bought this converter. Simply put, it is fantastic. I have been backing up tapes into iMovie from my VHS's scart port using a scart-to-RCA adaptor and it puts my DVD recorder to shame. There is no interlacing and the video and audio quality is as good as the source video. One thing to note. When using an s-video connection from a VHS (via a scart adaptor), the video will go black and white. This is no fault of the converter's, this is down to how VHS players output picture. Just... I know that there are cheaper products out there for PC's (not for Mac's) but this product really works. It does everything it claims to do and extremely well. Can be used on any platform.I have tried importing analogue films via a cheap adaptor onto a PC and into U-lead software and found it all very painful. Slow, unreliable quality, missing sound tracks etc. Now, I have an intel Mac and using the ADVC-55 and Apple's I-movie08, it really is all very simple to convert your analogue material to DV. The only extra I needed was a switchable (in-out) scart to Din plug lead for some VHS tapes I have made. Superb kit, expensive but if your material is worth editing and saving (tapes deteriorate) then it's more than worth it. I even thought about sending my old VHS tapes to be professionally transfered, but then i decided something. If you want something done right, do it yourself. This item is pretty expensive, but you get what you pay for. I wouldnt waste your time getting a cheap transfer device that connects via USB, because video quality by that route is not ideal.This canopus connects to your PC or Mac with a Firewire cable. The firewire is ideal for video transfer if you want the best quality. If youre lucky enough you wont need to by a separate power supply, but if you only have a 4 pin firewire port on your computer, then your gonna have to. I use my canopus with my mac, so im only fluent in iMovie for this kind of transfer thing but i guess its the same basic principle for each different movie making software.
